Year 2

Welcome to Year 2.

This is the children's final year of Key Stage 1 and throughout the year we build on all the children have learned so far. We will do this through a variety of exciting themes and the Paget Curriculum Guarantee, building on your child’s education and developing their learning in all areas from English and Maths to PE, DT, Art, Science, RE, PSHE and lots of Music!

At the end of this year the children will take the Year 2 SATs tests which will give them a scaled score against the national standard, demonstrating their proficiency so far in the subjects of Reading, Writing, Grammar and Mathematics. This will be reviewed with teacher assessments to give an overall level for your child.

With regard to the Phonic Screening, please note that due to Covid this did not happen as planned at the end of Year 1. As such, the children will be assessed towards the end of Autumn 2 and if they are successful will not have to repeat the test in the Summer term. We will continue to use the amazing Read Write Inc scheme to help your children with their phonics and developing their reading (with a focus on fluency and comprehension of a great range of books).

To support their learning at home the children will have access to Oxford Owl, which gives you and your child the opportunity to read lots of different texts and play games relating to the texts that the child has read. Where appropriate children will also learn the Year 2 set spelling rules and this will be supported by the online Spelling Shed where teachers can set children spellings for them to practice at home.

To boost maths your child will have access to TT Rockstars, which is a carefully sequenced programme of daily time tables practice, where children can pick a character to play as and they can practice timetables with a focus on their 2, 5, 10 and 3 x tables.

Year 2 is also the year your child will be taken to weekly swimming lessons at Erdington Baths, to not only learn swimming skills but how to be safe in the water. This will be under constant review with regard to Covid Restrictions. Another fun thing in year 2 is that we get to go on a residential for two days and one night where we try out great activities like zip wire, canoeing and singing round a proper camp fire but again will be subject to the Covid requirements.

We hope you will have the best time in year 2 and we look forward to helping your child to grow both socially and academically.

The teaching staff in Year 2s are Mrs Styles (Class Teacher) and Miss Hewitt (Teaching Assistant).

The teaching staff in Year 2B are Miss Bennett (Class Teacher) and Mrs Brain (Teaching Assistant).
