Reception

Welcome to Reception!

We know for many of our children this is their first time in a school setting. We focus upon the whole child, we encourage children to be independent learners, to play and explore, be active and creative.

We approach this through a rich, broad and balanced curriculum with a range of learning activities both indoors and outdoors which engage, challenge and promote curiosity. We understand each child is unique, learns in their own way and has their own interests.

The teaching staff in Reception facilitate play, playing alongside and with your child in order to challenge, develop knowledge and relationships with your child as well as leading focused activities.

During Reception the children learn within the EYFS Framework, your child will be learning new skills, acquiring knowledge and developing their skills through the seven areas of learning and development. They work towards achieving the Early Learning Goals by the end of Reception.

In Reception we focus on the prime areas of:

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

These areas are essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

As your child grows the prime areas will help them to develop in the specific areas of:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

At Paget we use the Read Write Inc. as our main approach to learning to read and write. This helps students with their phonics and their development of reading and writing. Children have daily sessions to develop the skills and knowledge in Literacy.

Throughout the day, there are times when the children will work with their class teacher and TA. However, the rest of the day the children can ‘free flow’ across all of the activities in Reception both indoors and outdoors, with all the children and teaching staff.

There are two classes in Reception:

  • Tigers with class teacher Miss Johnston.
  • Leopards with class teacher Mrs Moseley.
  • Mrs McConnolly is our Teaching Assistant for Reception.
  • Miss Johnson is the EYFS Lead.

We look forward getting to know you in Reception and being a part of your learning journey.
