Year 1

Hello and welcome from the Year 1 team!

As a team, we believe that every child can do fantastic things and we look forward to watching your children grow and develop throughout this year.

Year 1 is an exciting time when children have left Foundation Stage and are beginning their time in Key Stage One. During the year, children use and build upon the knowledge they have learnt from Reception in a fun and practical way.

Throughout the year, the children are taught many subjects which the teachers always carefully plan and differentiate to suit each child’s needs and ability, as well as organising trips where appropriate to extend your child’s learning.​

To help your child read we follow the Read Write Inc scheme, which helps develop children’s phonics and reading knowledge. We promote a love of reading by teaching children a base of pure sounds which can be applied and blended into words. Children will practise reading their story books 3 times and then these will be sent home so they continue to embed this skill with you.  We regularly assess your child to ensure your child is in the correct Read Write Inc Group.  Your child is also given the opportunity to develop their handwriting and sentence work with a big focus on creating independent learners.

Towards the end of Year 1, the children will take a national phonic screening test to assess their reading ability. These tests are reviewed and results are shared with parents.

We teach the importance of Maths during daily lessons to develop their numeracy fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Within our classrooms, we have an abundance of concrete and abstract resources to support children to represent and understand different mathematical problems. At home children can continue with their learning by accessing the mathematical game Numbots online where the children can practice their counting and number skills in a fun way.
