Year 6

Welcome to Year 6.

This is the children’s final year of primary education and throughout the year we build on all the children have learned so far. We will do this through a variety of exciting themes and topics, building on your child’s education and developing their learning in all areas from English and Maths to PE, DT, Science, Geography, RE, PSHE and lots of Art!

Our aim is to enable all children to achieve their goals, prepare them for their next steps and equip them ready for the world around them.

Year 6 is an extremely important year for our pupils. At the end of the year the children will take the Year 6 SATs tests which will give them a scaled score against the national standard, demonstrating their proficiency so far in the subjects of Reading, Writing, Grammar and Mathematics. This will be reviewed with teacher assessments to give an overall level for your child. We equip our learners with meaningful and purposeful lessons that are useful in their everyday lives, as well as preparing for the challenges of the SATs exams.

This year, we will be using a wide range of books and making links with other subjects. Not only will this help students with their reading fluency it will also encourage them to develop a love of wider reading, thus enriching their language and writing.

Students will also learn the Year 6 set spelling rules and statutory spellings to support their learning at home.

To boost Maths your child will have access to TT Rockstars, which is a carefully sequenced programme of times tables practice, where children can pick a character to play as and they can practice timetables with a focus on their tables up to 12×12.

Our balanced curriculum is extremely fun, lively, and full of varying learning styles that suit children’s varied needs. In addition, we are very proud of the level of responsibility that our pupils take on in Year 6 including, amongst other things, school council leaders, and attendance and house captains. Our mission is to make children become responsible and proactive leaders, edging the way for future responsibilities.

Year 6 is also the year your child will take weekly swimming lessons in the summer term, at Erdington Leisure Centre, to not only learn swimming skills but how to be safe in the water. Another fun thing in Year 6, is that we get to go on a Residential. This makes for an excellent memorable experience where we try out great activities such as rock climbing, canoeing and abseiling.

Above all, we aim to ensure Year 6 is a fantastic, final year for Paget learners so they can look back in many years’ time with lots of fond memories!

We hope you will have the best time in year 6 and we look forward to helping your child to grow not only academically, but also socially and mentally. Their well-being is our first and foremost priority. We offer a safe and warm environment for all.

The Year 6 team are Miss Robinson (Class Teacher and Curriculum Development Lead), Mr Bagshaw (Class Teacher) and Mrs Denny (Teaching Assistant).
